In Their Own Words

To celebrate the value of mentorship, I asked some of those who I’ve had both the honor and pleasure to serve as their mentor share their insights and experiences.

I’ve very grateful to them for their thoughtful responses and for allowing all of us to learn from their personal stories.

In what ways has your mentor’s experience and advice shaped your career trajectory or personal goals?

“My time with my mentor, Al, has been a life-changing experience. He’s taught me to have the patience to let ideas and people grow at their own pace, and that it’s okay to challenge the status quo – situation permitting. I’ve also learned the importance of modeling the way for others by seeing it firsthand, and how leading through influence can be just as satisfying as having ‘an important title.’ Overall, having a mentor has been instrumental in contributing to my professional (& personal) development, drastically shaping how I approach my work and leadership as a whole.”

“My experience with mentors has been less about getting specific guidance or steps to my next project or role. They provided different lens in which to view and enhance my experience related to where I was and where I envisioned myself to be. They are my ‘dream’ partners with their feet permanently planted in reality while leaving me room to fully imagine, visualize, and realize my goals from angles I never considered.”

Can you share a pivotal moment in your mentorship journey where the guidance you received opened a new perspective or changed your approach to a challenge?

“A pivotal moment in my mentorship and overall career journey was when my mentor asked me to write a reflection on the lessons I learned [during my experience with him] and ways he could improve as a leader. By providing space for and encouraging honest feedback, he opened my eyes to see management as a two-way street. As a direct report, I should be looking for qualities I like in my management and speak up when things are not working. As a leader, I should be open to constructive criticism and always open to learn from my direct reports. This practice was established when I was an intern and I continue to write feedback to my managers in my full-time position.”

How has mentorship accelerated your growth and what has been the most valuable lesson learned from your mentor?

“The most valuable lesson learned from my mentor is trusting your experience and allowing your employees to participate in the project decision making.  You cannot win alone and when you do win,  it will become a companywide celebration.”

“My mentor’s guidance has been instrumental in accelerating my growth, both personally and professionally. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of setting clear goals and priorities. By establishing a defined timeframe for achieving these goals, I’ve been able to stay focused and committed, ensuring steady progress and meaningful accomplishments along the way. This structured approach has been pivotal in navigating my career path and personal development.”

“Having a mentor has accelerated my personal and professional growth, particularly enhancing my leadership skills. It’s taught me the importance of maintaining a broad perspective and the power of beginning with the end in mind. The most valuable lesson I’ve learned from my mentor is the principle of “Be Water,” which emphasizes adaptability. This has been instrumental in my development, as it reminds me to remain flexible and responsive to change, ensuring that I navigate through challenges with resilience and innovation.”

“Mentorship has allowed me to identify characteristics I want to be known for. The most valuable lesson I learned from a mentor is to remain humble and use my voice wisely. Prior to mentorship, I always believed that the loudest person was the smartest in a room. However, this is rarely the case and true influence comes from knowing when to listen to others.”

“My mentor instilled the importance of taking initiative to connect with others. Expanding my network and forming relationships has been essential in discovering new opportunities.”

What specific skills or knowledge have you gained from your mentorship that you feel would not have been possible otherwise?

“The specific skill or knowledge that I have gained in mentorship has been more engaged communication with my employees.  Prior to the relationship with my mentor, when my employees arrived at work, the goal was to get them working on their assignments immediately.  Now, when my staff arrive for the 8 AM meeting, I am more flexible and allow more non-work-related conversation. Thus, my staff is more relaxed and responds better to my deadlines. I have learned that good communication creates a great workplace.”

“My mentor’s experience and advice have significantly shaped my career trajectory and personal goals, particularly by teaching me to gain more confidence in myself. This newfound confidence has not only bolstered my leadership skills but also paved the way for my career advancement. Al’s guidance has been instrumental in helping me realize my potential and strive for excellence.”

“From my mentor, I have learned how to balance professionalism with authenticity in my business correspondence. I strive to be polished and sincere in all my interactions.”
