Lead with Light™
My Quest Begins…
“In 2020, a phone call changed everything. Three words, then silence: ‘You have cancer.’ What came next, slowly and unexpectedly, was a deeper understanding of what leadership really means.”
Lead with Light™ is a framework built on that kind of clarity, and an operating system that runs underneath it. Neither stands apart from the other. It starts where all great leadership starts: on the inside. When you know who you are, what you stand for, and why it matters, you naturally become a source of direction and inspiration for the people around you.
Start Here
Most leadership development skips the most important question: who are you, really? This is the inner work that makes everything else possible.
THE FRAMEWORK
The Loop is the path, but it doesn’t run on its own. Purpose, Virtues, Cadence, and Feedback are the operating system underneath it, running through all three movements at once, not parceled out step by step. Calibrate, Cultivate, and Illuminate are the movements you’ll walk, again and again, each pass a little higher than the last.
Calibrate your compass
Ask most leaders what they value and they’ll give you a quick answer. Ask whether their daily decisions actually reflect those values, and the room gets quiet. Calibrating your compass is about closing that gap, getting honest about purpose, priorities, and the principles worth standing on when it costs something.
“Values hang on the wall. Virtue-driven action walks down the hall.” — Al Viller
Cultivate your character
Here’s something the books don’t always say out loud: character isn’t something you have. It’s something you grow. You don’t wake up with patience. You grow it like a gardener. The same goes for courage, humility, and integrity. Cultivating character means doing the quiet work of becoming, not just performing.
“Character isn’t what you announce. It’s what shows up when no one is keeping score.”
— Al Viller
Illuminate the path for others
This is where leadership becomes a gift. Not by having all the answers, but by seeing the potential in the people around you, naming it out loud, and creating enough safety for them to rise into it. How we lead is as important as what we achieve. That’s not a soft idea. It’s a competitive advantage.
“How we do what we do — how we lead — is just as important as what we achieve.” — Al Viller

THE EVIDENCE
“In a noisy, polarized, AI-saturated world, character plus clarity is a competitive advantage. Virtue-driven action builds trust, speeds decisions, and helps people feel safe enough to do their best work.” — Al Viller
Organizations that align purpose, virtue-driven behavior, and clear execution consistently outperform peers on trust, engagement, and long-term value. The research backs it up.
A 2026 study of 300 culture practitioners by bink found the same pattern from another angle. 91% agreed that a gap between what leaders say and how they behave is one of the most damaging forces inside an organization, and 78% agreed that employees learn the real culture by watching what leaders tolerate, not what they announce. That’s the gap Lead with Light was built to close.
Further, six companies, spanning manufacturing, consumer goods, healthcare, technology, and airlines, show what this alignment looks like at scale: Barry-Wehmiller, WD-40, Patagonia, Honest Health, Microsoft, and Southwest Airlines. Although none of them built their culture around Lead with Light, each one shows, in its own industry, what happens when purpose, virtue-driven action, and clarity actually line up.
